On Wednesday, 10/9, students in Mrs. Fatura's Applications of STEM class had the opportunity to participate in a Skype a Scientist program. We connected virtually with Jessica Chen who has a degree in biomedical engineering and is currently in her 6th year of neuroscience PhD program at the University of Michigan. She is working on a transplant involving gene therapy to lessen inflammation related to spinal cord injuries. Jessica had a lot of great knowledge to share about her work as well as general advice about college and selecting a career path.

On Tuesday, 10/1, Mrs. Fatura's STEM class competed in a Shark Tank style competition for the creation and design of a best new yard game. Students designed, built and tested their games. In addition, they had to think about profit margins, marketing, packaging and advertising their product. Thank you to Kathy Surd, Laura Nugent, Paul O'Grady, Glenn Beavis and Jean Russell who were our "shark" for the challenge. The winners were Brandon Macher, Mikaylyn Kenney, Campbell Miller and Shane Roberts for their game called "Chuck It". A close second was the game "Velthrow" with a team of Grace Powers, Paige Ruggles, Barbie Grondsma and Alex Drechen. It was a really fun experience to see the students innovate and problem solve. All of the groups did a fantastic job!

Do you have a Pentwater High School student (9th-12th grade)? Pentwater High School students have been given the opportunity to receive a free ticket for the play, FRANKENSTEIN, as presented by WSCC Performing Arts! Interested high school students should see Mrs. Jeruzal to receive their free tickets. Description and showtimes are as follows, no strings (or bolts) attached! "Come experience the chilling stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic nove, Frankenstein. Playwright R.N. Sandberg takes the audience on a journey exploring the mind of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with the origins of life, who eventually is able to reanimate a corpse. Appalled by what he has done, Frankenstein flees and his creation roams the countryside in search of love and family and is shunned at every turn. Driven by rejection and scorn, the creature vows that Frankenstein will pay for the torment and anguish he has caused." Thursday, October, 24, 2019: 7:30pm-10pm Friday, October 25, 2019: 7:30pm-10pm Saturday, October 26, 2019: 7:30pm-10pm, and Sunday, October 27, 2019: 2pm

Our 2nd grade friends enjoyed a special time and a beautiful day at Golden Sands on Monday, 9/30/19, to celebrate achieving their September Reading Goal. They also spent time connecting class discussions to entrepreneurship. Students all had "jobs" as table washers, table setters and servers, while preparing their own bread bite appetizers. Mrs. Alicia Kolenda and Izzy gave a turtle presentation and nature tour of the turtle research being collected and led by Dr. Dave Merrick. Students released three painted turtles back into the pond after data was collected on them. Lastly, the class spent time learning about golf etiquette, and, of course, hitting balls on the driving range and on the putting green. A special thank you to the Kolenda family for their support and a hosting a fun-filled day!

The Big Crunch is coming soon! The Big Crunch is a statewide celebration that counts the number of people that are biting into a Michigan apple at one time.  Last October, there were 1,564,367 students, children, teachers, and good food supporters across the area that crunched.  Pentwater and Hart students crunched 1,475 Rennhack's Orchard SweeTango Apples!  The event is usually at 1:21pm, because of its connection with Muskegon's "1 in 21" initiative (a goal to be the healthiest county in Michigan by 2021).  By participating in this event, we are supporting Michigan farmers, which in turn supports Michigan's economy. It also promotes healthy eating and fosters school spirit.  This year's Big Crunch will be on Thursday, October 10, 2019!  Won't you join us by participating in the "Big Crunch"?
